Article: Exploring the Spectrum of Gender Diversity

Exploring the Spectrum of Gender Diversity

Last updated: February 3, 2026

Gender diversity feels natural to some people and new or complicated to others. That makes sense. It is not one linear story, but a spectrum with different layers. Identity, expression, physical characteristics, and attraction can relate to each other, but they are not the same thing.

With this blog, we want to make the basics clear. Not to place labels on anyone, but to offer language for something that is deeply personal for many people. And above all, to help keep the conversation respectful and safe.

First, an important distinction: four layers that often get mixed up

You often see an online diagram showing four different parts. We use the same four because they help create clarity.

1) Sex or biological sex

Sex refers to physical characteristics such as chromosomes, hormones, and sex characteristics. This is usually classified at birth as female or male, but not everyone fits into those two boxes. In those cases, there may be intersex variations.

Important: intersex is about physical characteristics. It is not the same as gender identity or sexual orientation.

2) Gender identity

Gender identity is how you feel inside. For example, woman, man, non-binary, genderfluid, or something else. It does not have to match the sex that was recorded at birth.

3) Gender expression

Gender expression is how you show yourself to the world. Think about clothing, hair, voice, posture, make-up, hobbies, language, and style. This can change from day to day and from one context to another. Gender expression does not automatically say anything about someone’s sexual orientation.

4) Attraction and sexuality

Sexual orientation is about who you are attracted to. That attraction can be romantic, emotional, sexual, or a mix of those. Examples include straight, gay, bi+, pan, and ace. This is separate from gender identity.

Why this topic matters

Because language and understanding have a real impact. When someone feels they have the space to be themselves, they often feel safer and more connected. And the opposite is also true: misunderstanding and exclusion can create stress.

It also matters in practical settings: at school, at work, in sports teams, and in groups of friends. It helps a lot when we understand what words mean and when we dare to ask questions in a respectful way.

How to talk respectfully about gender diversity

Ask for someone’s name and pronouns when it is relevant
Example: Which pronouns do you use?

Correct yourself calmly if you make a mistake
Example: Sorry, I meant she. Thank you for correcting me.

Avoid assumptions based on appearance
Someone may identify differently from what you expect.

Use the word someone uses for themselves
Terms can differ from person to person, and that is okay.

Make room for uncertainty
Not everyone knows right away. Doubt and exploration are normal.

Frequently asked questions

Is gender the same as sex?

No. Sex is about physical characteristics. Gender is about socially and culturally shaped roles, and about personally experienced identity.

https://www.nji.nl/kennis/seksualiteit-en-gender/wat-betekenen-sekse-en-gender

Is gender diversity something new?

No. Variations in gender and expression have existed across many times and cultures. What is newer is that there is now more language and visibility around it.

Does gender expression have anything to do with sexual orientation?

Not necessarily. Gender expression and orientation are different things.
