The Impact of Societal Expectations on Social Pressure Among Gen Z and Millennials

In addition to the influence of social media , Gen Z and millennials may also feel pressure to meet the expectations and standards set by society. With a focus on achieving the "perfect" life – including a successful career, a happy and fulfilling personal life, and a well-curated social media presence – many young people feel pressure to constantly perform and achieve.

I must honestly confess that I felt too much about that too. However, I am glad I did (and to some extent still do), because it allows me to know that this issue is really on the table among our generation.

This constant pressure to succeed can lead to feelings of anxiety and stress, as well as a fear of failure or disappointment. Research has shown that individuals who feel pressure to conform to societal expectations are more likely to experience mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. The effects of social pressure can also impact physical health, with studies linking it to increased risk of cardiovascular disease and other health problems.

Societal expectations can take many forms, from the pressure to excel academically or professionally to the expectation to maintain a certain appearance or lifestyle. These expectations can be internalized and lead to feelings of self-doubt or a lack of self-worth if they are not met.

To cope with the effects of societal expectations on social pressure, it can be helpful to practice self-compassion: being kind and understanding towards oneself rather than judging or criticizing oneself. It's important to remember that no one is perfect and it's okay to make mistakes or fall short of certain expectations. Seeking support from loved ones and mental health professionals can also provide a sense of perspective and help individuals to focus on their own goals and values rather than external expectations.
